Introduction

Greetings from the staff of McLeod Eco Farm.

Experience an unforgettable part of Australia’s ecological and cultural history, only 65Km from Melbourne!

History

McLeod Eco Farm was originally the site of the McLeod Prison Farm opened on July 17, 1916.  This medium security prison accommodated 120 prisoners at its peak and operated until 1975.  Between 1977 and 1985 it was a “Life-Be In It” children’s camp operated by the Victorian Government entertaining and educating thousands of students.

In December 1995 it was bought by Next Generation International.  After extensive renovations McLeod Eco Farm opened its doors in November 1997.  Today, in addition to a wide variety of educational and recreational activities available to guests, the techniques of permaculture and biodynamic farming are taught and practiced on the farm.  The philosophy of these techniques goes far beyond conventional organic methods, proving that success is as much  about love and living as one with Mother Earth as it is about any specific agricultural practice. McLeod Eco Farm mimics nature by enriching the soil with abundance of living things and without the use of chemicals. The entire property is 222 hectares (555 acres) and is completely surrounded by French Island’s 11,100 hectare National Park.

Garden of Eve

Enjoy Mother Earth at her finest and walk in our gardens where we grow over 50 varieties of vegetables and 75 fruits.  We grow to the highest standards known to womankind, designing our systems to mimic Mother Nature’s natural synergies. Our methods are simple.  We use pigs to clear and prepare the gardens and chickens to aerate the soil.  We then plant a variety of legumes to break down the livestock’s manure and naturally balance the nitrogen in the soil.  Through further processes the soil becomes alive with love and ready to be planted in.  We have all the bugs and slugs known to mankind which live in a symbiotic relationship with all that grows around them.  The bugs don’t eat all the green and living things in natural systems and similarly do not bother our vegetables.  Mother Nature has worked it all out and all we’ve done is copy her.  Organic Wagyu beef, pork and lamb are also raised on the farm.  Come taste the difference!

Produce and meats can be purchased for your self-catering kitchen or taken home with you.
